Project 2 has now commenced, which is the freelance project where we have freedom to really do whatever we want this time. After bouncing around some ideas of what I wanted to do after my first project, I came to the conclusion that I would like to do another pop song, this time fixing my mistakes that I made the first time around, and this time I’d like to do it alone.

With my last project, I had found an artist to send me a demo that they had written, and I then produced a new, EDM style pop track out based off of that demo with 2 others. This time I’m kind of doing it almost completely independently, I am now writing a pop song and creating everything except for the lyrics and vocal elements (although I must say, these are a crucial part), I will then find an artist to sing over the track, rather than remaking their pre existing track.

The reason I’m doing this is because I think one of the problems with my last project was that although it seemed fine, the original vocals just didn’t really match the new track all that well. It was planned that we would workshop the vocals and change things around however due to the artists schedule this didn’t really happen, so it kind of just came out as a kind of weird remix of the first song. On top of that, I think that since it was created from scratch in a limited time frame, the song just ended up being not that catchy, and felt a bit forced. When I write my music often times it sounds fine to me when I first make it, however many times I decide that If i still like the song after about a month, then it is still something I am happy with, and by creating a new song from scratch I never really got the chance to think if this was something I would actually release.

This time around I want to attempt to create a pop song again because I really want to build on my skills and have something that I love on my portfolio.

I decided to expand on a chord progression that I had already written months ago that I still love, in order to keep the motivation up and end with a product that I am more likely to be happy with. I’m choosing more of an alternative indie pop song rather than what can be heard on mainstream US radio. That being said, It’s still being marketed to the same pop listeners as the first, I’m just doing it in more of a unique style rather than following trends as I did the first time.

This time I’m also very particular about who I am going to pick to sing on this song, so I have done some research into what artists are around that I can ask to work with. I had noticed that there was a lot more indie alternative singers in Brisbane that could work in a pop scenario rather than mainstream pop sounding artists. This is another thing that made my plan to do an Indie Pop song a bit more sustainable. However, all of that was in the very first planning stages of the project.

I had one band that was interested in working with me however they stopped responding to me, so I decided to go with another singer. After messaging a classmate, Zac, if he knew any artists, he said he would be himself happy to be a part of the project and would do some vocals for the song. I’ve heard Zac’s work and I think he can work perfectly with the song, and I have benefit that he is also in my class so we can update each other on the collaboration frequently.

As for the song itself, I’m thinking of creating something similar to Sometimes by Miami Horror, as to me it really captures the summer, indie vibe I’m trying to achieve.
